Hi Neville

We have just returned from Phuket and we hired Mopeds. We have two young boys and it was a geat way to see a lot more of he island. We paid 150 baht per bike per day and left 3000 Baht per bike depsite. You can leave your passport instead but I don;t think many tourist do this. They supply one helmet per bike and we just went to Carefore and purchased a couple of the kids. We had no problem hiring them at all and no issues when we returned the bikes. I did smash the mirror but it cost 80 baht to fix it and they didn%26#39;t even notice.

Take a look at this news story:

www.phuketgazette.com/dailynews/index.asp?/a>

The last three years I%26#39;ve rented my own scooter for 300 baht a day. Probably overpaid but what%26#39;s $10USD, you know?

ONLY if you%26#39;re an experienced motorcycle rider should you rent one as the Thai drivers use signals and lane control and speed limits as mere suggestions.

Also, only leave a COPY of passport and never give them a deposit. You will never get it back. Take snaps of the entire scooter in front of the renter so they don%26#39;t suddenly charge you for damage, which they will.

Aside from those few hassles, you%26#39;ll be thankful to have the mobility. And make sure you and your passenger wear a helmet because the cops will stop you and fine you 500 baht. Make sure you keep your passport on you while driving, too.

It%26#39;s really not as bad as it sounds...

just remember

your insurance wont cover you if you have an accident

and you may well have one

taking kids on a m/cycle is crazy (imo

Thank you all for your input, not sure which way to go. Thanks again

Hi Catman

Suport everything nosescott has to say - never leave your passport with renter. If they are not there when you go back you are well and truly in trouble.

If you do hire one be careful, take things slowly and give way probably more than you do here - they do have their own road rules.

Over heard an Aussie couple talking to someone at airport about there mate in hospital still on his back(2weeks)after the frontend collapsed and he had given then his Passport. Not an exciting way to spend your holidays.

In the event of an accident insurance will not pay out unless you have an international drivers license.

My motto is '; If you dont ride at home, dont ride when you%26#39;re away';. If you%26#39;re not confident don%26#39;t do it.

Other than that its great fun and you get to see a lot more sights and can get off the beaten track.

As the Thais might say ';up to you';.
