American drowned off Karon

www.phuketgazette.net/dailynews/index.asp?/a>

Maybe he had a heart attack while in the sea but red flags are flying everywhere yet hardly anyone seems to take any notice of them. We get this year after year around this time. You really need to be wary of the riptides at this time of year.

Maybe he drowned. Maybe not.

Last year a well known entrepreneur died on Nai Harn beach and it was initially thought to be a drowning. Turns out it wasn%26#39;t a drowning but was believed to be a heart attack.

I%26#39;ll be watching to see about this one. (if they post more info on it?)

Should be pointed out that the red flags seem to go up around June and stay up until they take them down sometime around Nov or Dec.

Even on the calmest days they stay up.

I doubt anyone wants to take any responsibility for saying the swimming is safe so it%26#39;s easier to just leave them up.

That means they get ignored.

Not a good way to run a lifeguard service.

But then again, i%26#39;ve heard that many of the lifeguards can%26#39;t even swim.

So sad when you hear of something like that, go out for a swim and don%26#39;t come back alive. Bit of a worry if the lifeguards can%26#39;t swim. Who%26#39;s going to save them??

the thai ';police'; always put a ';heart attack'; as ';drowning '; as an ecscuse--

less paper-work i would imagine-- so they can go back to the station and drink their som-sam with their feet up on the table

they always get away with it -- wankers

Well, since he apparently died on dry land, a heart attack seems more likely than drowning.

Whatever the truth in this case, drownings in Phuket are common, and many visitors are not aware of the dangerous riptides that exist. Those who choose to ignore red flags are just irresponsible.

I was on the beach when this happened. He didn%26#39;t appear to be alive when he was brought up to the sand. The sea was not particularly rough but you can never tell what is happening under the waves. Best to just obey the flags.
