Chaweng + natzis / Island Resort & Spa (Natzi worker)?

Hello!

I did read some reviews of Island Resort %26amp; Spa (the one near Al%26#39;s Hut - Montien House). And someone told that there is working a man who has the Nazi sign tattooed on him. This didn%26#39;t sound good at all!!

Any comments about this?

Is there really a natzi working in this resort?

And are there lots of natzis in Samui/Chaweng?

Chaweng + natzis / Island Resort %26amp; Spa (Natzi worker)?

I didnt see anybody working there with a Nazi tattoo?

The Swastika is i think a ';Hindu'; sign adopted by both Nazi%26#39;s and the Romans, if you ever go to Bali you will see it everywhere there are even hotels and resturaunts called Swastika with the sign out front if that is the sign you mean?

As for the resort its a bit of a dump if you ask me, unless you stay in one of the poolside bungalows i would rate it less than 2 star and the beach up that end isnt the best if the tide is low.

Yes, I remember that the person did say ';Swastika, the natzi sign..';. But he/she didn%26#39;t seem to know that Swastika is also hindu sign... That is good to know :)

I know the Island Resort is not on the best side...

But we are looking something cheap :)

And I think it is in more quiet are? Not so busy/loud night life there?

Take a look at the ';Red House'; in Bophut if you are looking for cheap and not too busy.

1 sleep to go!

I just wanted to drop a line to say thanks to all those who%26#39;ve posted on this site. I%26#39;ve spent the past 3 months devouring every new entry and if I saw there was a new JBR I%26#39;d pour a glass of wine, sit back and enjoy.

My partner has been away for 3 months and knows nothing about the trip. He thinks we%26#39;re off for a weekend to Hamilton (a very non remarkable town in NZ)to catch up with friends, so half the excitement will be his reaction.

I have a notebook filled with tips %26amp; tricks; Cathy %26amp; Gary%26#39;s price list (your website is in my favourites list), where to hire good motorbikes, best spas, how to find Mr Noon%26#39;s, suggested eating places, suggested siteseeing routes and of course shopping info galore.

Thank you so much again, I%26#39;ll post a JBR on my return.

Kind regards

Becky

Great isn%26#39;t it? I%26#39;ve had a ball checking places out.

Yeah it%26#39;s a good map. And the weather on that day must have been really good. Clear blue skies.

Hi Nauts,

Thanks for that, it%26#39;s sensational , I have just zoomed in on Nicky%26#39;s Handlebars and also walked past our hotel Andaman Beach Suites.

Cheers,

Stewie.

All newbies should have a look at the map and they will have an idea where everything is situated(provided no changes, except that Starbucks and McD is not on the Bangla Map yet) it will be easier for them to get their bearings right.

Yes, not only was the weather good but so was the lack of traffic - must have been early in the morning.

Can%26#39;t wait to get home now - unable to access stuff like that from work BUGGA!!!!! oh well roll on 5pm

Deb

Isn%26#39;t this just Google Streetview??

Thanks Nauts, I was wondering how I might be able to find everything, this should make it a bit easier.

OMG, Thank you so much for that Nauts. Just rang my girlfriend up at work and told her that ive just walked along the beach and been out side our hotel to be (seaview hotel) lol. cant wait. 10 more sleeps!!!!!!

  • vaccines for thailand, malaysia or singapore

Hello, I am travelling to all of the above countries - Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia for a 3 week trip starting this December. I really want to avoid all vaccines - I am a doctor myself! Any suggestions besides Deet? I am also going to consult with a homeopathic travel doc. My American friend has lived in Southease Asia and he said I would be fine. I don%26#39;t want to be stupid but I don%26#39;t think I will be that exposed if I am mainly city travelling (no hiking) and have a history of some digestive problems. Thanks for any help anyone can provide. Lifetraveller63

vaccines for thailand, malaysia or singapore

As you are a Doctor you know the risks but we travel a few times a year to Asia mainly to Thailand but also to Singapore and Malaysia but did have the Hep A shots. We did that after a lot of advice but mainly because of the food handling and water in Asia and not wanting to be concerned about enjoying our time.

Never worry about Malaria treatment, actually even hate Deet so have used on Thai advice the Citronella spray (which can be bought from the supermarkets or chemist) it smells so much better but would depend where you are going. I%26#39;m sure other people will have varying opinions but we have done this over many years and travel mainly the off season%26#39;s of Thailand so wet weather etc.

In Bangkok I don%26#39;t think we have ever seen a mosquito but will check that out in a couple of weeks when we return.

vaccines for thailand, malaysia or singapore

No jabs required, but mosquitos can come out anywhere there is fresh/stagnant water, especially at dusk. The above advise is good. High floor rooms in hotels will have fewer mossies than lower floors. Don%26#39;t leave mossie screens/and or windows wide open as you will invite them in.

After being to Thailand numerous times and not doing much more than use insect repellant, I lined up the family today and gave them the Hep A vaccine. Am having a drink of wine now to psych myself up to get mine!

I am not sure what made me get it for this trip, but I just hear the phrase ';faecal- oral'; transmission and it gives me the shivers.

I do think you should be up to date with your tetanus, but that isn%26#39;t just for travel, but regardless.

I would be more concerned regards dengue fever as I keep hearing about people who have caught this and have been really ill. So you are on the right track with the DEET.

    Enjoy your holiday

Have done a fair bit of research on the dengue fever ourselves but sounds essential to just be protected from the mossies and for dengue fever that special mossie that can be around in the day.

Pretty certain we can get Dengue Fever in northern Qld so not only happens in Asia. Think you will have no problems with the Hep A shot Ella107, we certainly didn%26#39;t and its good peace of mind.

I%26#39;ve lived in Thailand for 7 years and would recommend getting the following immunizations:

    Hepatitis A

    Typhoid

    Rabies

I have know a few people who have picked up Hep A traveling in SE Asia, so who knows which country is to blame.

Typhoid I had never thought about until a young friend of mine only 21 years old got Typhoid here in Thailand. He was down for a month, and out of things for another 5 months. I went got the vaccine pills right away when I saw that.

Rabies - This one is a personal choice. If you spend a lot of time around animals or just can%26#39;t resist petting the stray dogs in Thailand, I would. It%26#39;s more of a precautionary thing. I like to travel to more remote areas where I might not have access to major hospital that has the correct shot for a few days, so I got the RabiPur 3 shot series just in case. Besides if I ever do get bit, I don%26#39;t have to have as many boosters.

Dengue Fever is rather bad right now, primarily in the NorthWest ie. Pai / Mae Hong Son. I have a friend there that owns a restaurant and he came down with it a little over a month ago. He%26#39;s fine now, but he said that the local clinic%26#39;s beds are still full. Just take some precautions during the day and odds are on your side that you%26#39;ll be fine.

Like I said, I%26#39;ve been here 7 years and no problems and I%26#39;ve only witnessed a few. The odds are in your favor regardless.

Have a safe and stellar trip!

    Aloha

Hi, last night i was at the doctors and got the Hep A and Typhoid which is mixed into one shot and cheaper than buying seperately $117 AUS per person for both shots.... and i think one more hep a shot before we go althought the doctor said there should be some immunity..... but i wouldnt mind getting the last one couple of days before i go moust be approx one month in between each needle.... i was told...and they dont hurt one bit.

Our doctor recommended Hep A %26amp; typhoid (combined shot $117 each). We also got a tetanus shot.

I%26#39;d prefer to have the jab and enjoy my holiday rather than suffer the consquences of the illness.

    Ao Nang vs Railey Bay

    Hi,

We are planning on staying in the Krabi area mid Feb for two weeks.

Really want to do some climbing, snorkelling, relaxing and massages!

I really dislike the noise of cars so was wondering if Ao Nang or Railey Bay would be a better choice?

We could do a week in each...

I also like the idea of walking to restaurants and bars, which I understand there aren%26#39;t alot of in Railey Bay.

    Thank you in advance!

    JBR - Part 1 - Bangkok 08/09/08 - 18/09/08

    Merrry Meet To All!

I have finaly realised a dream of mine that I have wished for, for a long time. Yeahh I made it to Thailand and relise I have only just sctratched the surface of this amazing, kaotic, fenetic, and colourful country.

We arrived on Monday 08/09/08 at 9pm at night, upon exiting the airport we realised pretty quickly how overdressed we were for the climate. Being used to Bali wheather I assumed it would like that, but wow it was evan more humid and hotter. I love humid weather so this was off already to a great start.

Our pre-arranged hotel car had not arrived, tried ringing the hotel and were unsuccessful in getting anyone to answer, so I thought we would just get a taxi. We went through a few taxi%26#39;s and none of them would use the metre so we settled for a taxi on 500baht but by this stage I just wanted to get to the hotel. We were booked into Villa Cha Cha near Kaosan Road. It was raining and on the drive we took our first glimpse of Bangkok. We got to Kaosan Rd where the driver promptly stopped and took our luggage out of the boot, I asked him where the hotel was and he said just walk up there and he was gone. Umm my partner and I by now were a little confused and overwhelmed, Kaosan Rd by 10.30pm at night is fairly jumping and I was a little anxious, a taxi driver on the corner could obviously see the confusion on the new farangs faces and offered to drive us to the hotel for 200baht, I jumped at the offer and we were on our way again, or I should say just around the block, LOL :) you live and learn!!

A welcome drink at reception, and into our hotel room. Yeahh it was aweswome for $35.00Aus a night I was happy, bed comfy, shower and bathroom huge (you could hold a disco in it!) and Pay TV. Yeah I know but for someone who doesnt normaly have time to watch TV at home this was like luxury!!!!

We had a meal downstairs, which came to about 200baht was awesome, the prices at Villa Cha Cha are excellent for a hotel resturant. Stir fries and rice meals are about the 60 - 100 baht price, steak dinners are about 280baht and drinks start at 20 baht. The pool and statues and artwork that surrounds the hotel are just magnificient and show a real diverse range of talent that Thailand Artists offer, very impressed.

Next morning after rice and egg, we hit Kaosan Rd, looking at all the stalls and comparing prices etc before actualy buying anything, then all of a sudden everyone started packing up, we couldnt understand what was going on, but within 15 mins a few spits of rain had started to fall, I thought gee it%26#39;s only a few spits, then it hit!!! I have never seen such fat, big, hard rain drops in my life! It was glorious, Australia has been in drought now for 10 years or so, and to see so much rain fall was just amazing. So feeling silly and excited, Parnter and I decided to do abit of a ';Singing in the Rain'; dance along Kaosan Rd with all the locals looking at us as if we were daft or something, I didnt care it was heaven, until I realised on the way back to the hotel the roads had actualy been flooded, :) our dancing turned into wadeing through about 2 feet of water!!

Laughing our heads off we managed to wade and straggle back to the hotel where we left unfortunately massive amount of soggy footprints and water sploshes on the hotel floor, and felt very guilty as management made a hotel worker walk behind us mopping up our water mess with a towel, I made sure to give them a big tip! My one pair of sneakers were absolutely water logged, and having no other pair of shoes with me made this cause for concern as I didn%26#39;t want to go bare footed out onto the street looking for another pair. After a lovely cool drink and the rain had stopped, the hotel waitress asked me in the resurant ';why I had no shoes';! I explained that my only shoes were saturated and couldn%26#39;t be worn (I didn%26#39;t want to leave wet footprints all the way through the hotel again!) She then promptly took off her shoes and said ';borrow these and return them when you get another pair'; The genrosity of this simple gesture to a stranger was beautiful in it%26#39;s simplicity, without ego, without any expectation this is humanity at it%26#39;s finest. I promptly went out and bought a pair of shoes and a gift for her. Thankyou for your kindness, it will not be forgotten.

This is the first day of a our trip to Bangkok, one which evan as I speak, sitting at work is still weaving it%26#39;s majik and meaning through me. There will be more, thanks for reading... Blessings Adele

    ';We went through a few taxi%26#39;s and none of them would use the metre so we settled for a taxi on 500baht';

This is strange. If you%26#39;re talking about Bangkok airport, the taxi queues are supervised and you are allocated a taxi by a supervisor and you don%26#39;t even need to talk to the drivers. All fares are metered, so I am not sure what you were doing.

    JBR - Part 1 - Bangkok 08/09/08 - 18/09/08

As it is for many, your first encounter with the taxis was a disaster. The second taxi was a classic; any driver that approaches you, asking to help, will offer little help at a big price!

Glad you had the follow up with hotel girl. These encounters will be what you will remember foever!

That Tuesday had a heck of a cell pass through. Most of Bangkok had severe, yet sort lived flooding. I was stuck on a sidewalk, for 2 hours, unable to ride my motorcycle home.

    Opps!

There was a period after the .jpg!

    cheapeatsbangkok.com/photos/thai/flood.jpg

    Hi Adele,

glad to hear you really enjoyed your trip. It is a bit addictive isn%26#39;t it. Wait until you decide to explore more of this country. It has so much to offer!!!

Would like to ask why is it whenever someone has a story about getting ripped off by taxis refusing to put on their meters it is always questioned????

Ahh I am just adding the thing about the taxis as just part of my experience. We did go to the taxi table and register for a taxi and as soon as a driver comes up and takes you to the taxi they say 500baht etc and you say no please meter, so then we went back to the table and requested another taxi driver, and so on and so on. There was no help from the women at the taxi table when I said they wouldnt put the meter on and as it was very late at night now I was just happy to get to the hotel. So hoepfuly next time I go back to Bangkok it will be an earlier flight and I wont be so tired to not stand my ground. Not angry about the incident just recording what happened!

Cant waite to spend about three weeks in Thailand so I can go to the more rural/country areas etc and explore, but I recon it would take years to cover just most of Bangkok it is so overwhelmingly big, just wonderful.

Bangkok is awesome, big and very nice, but it definitely wont%26#39; take years to cover! Just a couple of very nice weeks :P

Looking forward to your next instalment.

Just loved reading about your experiences on arrival

in Bangkok. Looking forward to reading more.

Your explanation of your taxi encounter makes a good point. It illustrates a point about ';local'; advice. Locals, especially natives, often have a different perspective.

Many locals have someone pick them up at the airport. Those that hire drivers are quite familiar with them and know the ropes. The drivers will sense the passenger%26#39;s savvy, or lack thereof.

The old airport%26#39;s queue was pretty straight. We have yet to use Swampy%26#39;s queue, but have read countless complaints

Most taxi drivers, at any tourist venue, will first see a ';farang'; as a target for big baht. It%26#39;s why they are waiting at these venues.

A Thai person will be seen as ';one of us';, and always treated differently. It%26#39;s only when a foreigner shows a little knowledge of the game that we get to play with a full deck!

    Welcome to Thailand Adele,

There is a %26#39;white price and a right price system%26#39; here. But by the sound of it you had a great time and didnt let your first experience dampen your holiday mood, you will be wiser next trip.

My partner is Malaysian but looks Southern Thai so we tend to get treated more like locals, the only stumbling block is when they speak in Thai with him, his Thai is non-existant. My Thai is better than his.

In India last year he was also taken as a local and on flying into Cairns Airport a few years back he was greeted by a driver asking ';Sir, are you from New Guinea%26#39;. This always gives us a laugh.

    Aoi japanese restaurant

Anyone have the address of Aoi japanese restaurant in bangkok ?

    Many thanks

    Aoi japanese restaurant

They have branch in Paragon and Emporium shopping Center. There%26#39;s another one in Silom, but it%26#39;s always full. I like AOI, it%26#39;s one of the best Japanese in Bangkok

  • clear my labtop
  • where to eat

We are staying at the Majestic Grand for 3 nights. Can anyone recommend where to eat in the evening please. We are a group of 4 and over 50!

    where to eat

Your options are limitless in Bangkok and you will get lots of ideas, but as a simple suggestion while you are finding your Bangkok Feet, may I suggest walking about 5 minutes, turning left out of your hotel, to the corner of the main road.

On your right is the Marriott Hotel with a lovely lobby and gift shop, bakery and restaurants. This is expensive but a pleasant air conditioned experience, which you may appreciate after the heat of the street. Nice Loo%26#39;s too!! Just take a walk through and see what I mean.

On the left hand corner of the road (same side as your hotel), is a huge building called Ploenchit Centre. The upper floors are offices, but the basement, ground and first floors have lots of cafe and restaurant options, also a Starbucks, Chemist and in the Basement is also Villa Supermarket where you can get your snacks and mini bar supplies.

Incidentally being over 50 in Bangkok is not a handicap!

    where to eat

What kind of food do you like? Thai? Western? You really do not have to walk far from your (any) hotel to experience great food in Bangkok. Besides the shopping, the food is the next best thing!!

Lots of choices in all price ranges. Here are some cheap ones.

McDonalds, Burger Kings, KFC%26#39;s and food courts in malls. Walk over to Sukhumvit Soi 5, at the Foodland Supermarket you will find a neat little lunch counter that is open 24 hours a day. They serve Western and Asian foods. Very well known establishment.

    http://www.foodland.co.th/restaurant.htm

    Map of Sukhumvit area:

    guidetothailand.com/maps-thailand/bangkok-up?/a>

    Bon Appétit

The choices in Bangkok are endless, I suggest that you pick up a Luxe Guide at a good bookshop in the U.K. or buy one in Bangkok. It has some good restaurant suggestions.

And I agree totally with Yonny regarding age. I am now 60 and live / work here in Thailand. I have never felt so alive as I do here experiencing all of the wonderful and also humourous encounters on an almost daily basis.

Just one important tip which I%26#39;m sure you are already aware of .......... dont drink the local water.

bottled water is ok but yes not tap water

If you want to try local food, across the street from the Marriot (see above), you will find a cluster of thai food stalls. The food there is good and cheap.

Try Mango tree or Baan kanitha in Bangkok and after that for drinks at Sirrocco sky bar at State tower.

t least once try the street food it is generaly realy good and is amazingly cheap. A must do experience!

for the 4 of you take a taxi to Siam Paragon.

The food court is fabulous. try it

Thank you very much for all your suggestions. We will certainly try the street food and love to sample different cuisine - what%26#39;s the point in travelling abroad to eat burgers?!!!!!!!

    Can%26#39;t wait to go now.

Koh Talu Island snorkeling near Hua Hin

Kiwicom asked about this under the heading about best way to get to Hua Hin, but it may be of interest to others visiting the area who also would love a couple of days on a quiet tropical island with swaying palm trees and do snorkeling near Hua Hin

Koh Talu Island is a very small island, just a short boat ride from the mainland coast at Bang Saphan. That is about 2 and a half hours south of Hua Hin.

Koh Talu is a real %26#39;get away from it all%26#39; place, don%26#39;t expect shops or any entertainment at all, but for many that is the beauty of the place. A very small island.

If you want a couple of days snorkeling near Hua Hin and prefer not to do it as a day trip, then a couple of nights is for pure relaxing, snorkleing, messing around on the beach. Take walk and find a quiet spot !

I would say 2 nights sufficient, but to add that for those spending a couple of weeks in Hua hin / Cha Am it is really worth going for either the day trip, or better still a couple of nights - at least you will have been on a small Thai island !

The resort does 3 day/2 night packages with full board, snorkeling etc, quite a good deal. The package includes boat trip, if not taking their 3 day 2 night packages the resort also does a 7 am pick-up from the Clock Tower in Hua Hin at B 250 per person each way

    Lots of photos here:

    r24.org/beachsiam.com/?/a>

You can call Koh Talu %26#39;undiscovered%26#39;, although people venture there it is quite a %26#39;secret%26#39; - good for spotting it !

Just a couple of hours and then a short boat ride, I would highly recommend a couple of days for anyone spending say more than 7 days in the Hua Hin area.

Or at least do the day trip - all the tours agents offer the trip.

Koh Talu Island snorkeling near Hua Hin

I don%26#39;t understand Swedish but you don%26#39;t need to - these photos also give a good idea about Koh Talu -

Koh Talu Island snorkeling near Hua Hin

    Hi Monica

We are staying in Hua Hin in October and I%26#39;m interested in visiting Koh Talu.

Will they arrange just an overnight stay i.e. 1 night only.

    Thanks

You can take a day trip, it takes about 2 and half hours, all the tour companies do it, that includes transport by van, boat trip, I %26#39;think%26#39; they include masks and snorkels and live-vests etc and lunch but check on that.

certainly you can do just one night. They offer transfer leaving Hua Hin Clock Tower at 7 am and just book a night there. Once you get there decide if you want to kayak, snorkel, hike around the islands, swim, sail or just %26#39;laze%26#39;.

Actually Monica it isn’t the Koh Talu resort bus that picks up from the clock tower Hua Hin unless you specifically ask them to, there are a few other tours or trips that go down to Bangsapan but they do not land on the Island. The resort VIP transport will pick you up from your hotel or guest house at 7am arriving at 9am (2 hours). I have found the best place to book is with Bill at the Buffalo Tavern near the fishing pier in Hua Hin. Bill will get you the best deal as he and his family are very good friends with the owners of the Island.

Check it out on the net.

We did this day trip last week - excellent! I think we paid B2900 each although I later seen it for B2000.

We were picked up at the hotel at 7.00am and driven south for about 2 and half hours. We then boarded a small modern ferry type boat and took a 20 minute crossing to just off the island. The boat anchored and everyone got off to snorkel in the deep water. All the equipment was provided including bouancy aids if required. There were lots of fish unfortunately they seemed to be all the same type. After about 45 minutes we all got back on the boat and moved to a diffrent area which had more coral and less fish. My son was allowed to jump off the top deck into the sea (5m)a few times. After about 30 mins we got back on the boat and then landed on the island.

We were given an excellent lunch at the open air resturant and then went to explore the beach area of the island.

Beds were provided for sun bathing and kayaks for the sea.

The seawater was warm and clear however had a slight scum on it.It was the only time we swam in the sea as the sea around Hua Hin was very murky and the kids would not go into it.

There jungle went down to the beach and we could hear monkeys but couldn%26#39;t see them.

Next time we spend 2 weeks in Hua Hin we will defiantely go to the island for 2 nights and stay in the chalet type rooms.

Soft drinks, water and fresh fruit was provided free on the boat.

i%26#39;ve seen Forum and trips to Koh talu, from Rayong is it nearer there ?

i%26#39;ve 6 days in Thailand landing in bangkok, want to have 2 - 3 days in an island to relax. nearby Bangkok.

I only see 1 resort in Koh Talu online, is there more ? do i have a choice also How to get to and flo from bangkok

    MANY THANKS MATE!

    cheers

Thanks Monica, that%26#39;s a great tip. We are coming to Hua Hin at the end of October and a friend of ours said that it%26#39;s not a good idea to go snorkelling as it is rainy season and the sea will be full of jelly fish and rough. What%26#39;s your view on it?

    Thanks,

    Ivana

We went to Koh Talu 2 years ago in December. I arranged the accommondation on line independantly and made our own way there on the bus from Hua Hin bus station, I cant remember how much it was but a small amount.

It did take about 3 hours to get there. Once in bangsapan we had to take a taxi (about 15 mins) to the coastline where the boat set sail to take you to the island (about 10 mins)

The island was quite nice, but is split into two bays. we stayed in the pearl bay with the teak huts. The whole experience good, but nothing fantastic, in my opinion, but to get out and about and experience different areas and the sample the local transportation was quite exciting.

It cost approx 2800 baht each for speed boat transfer, snorkelling on the afternoon we arrived (but the water was very murky and couldnt really see much),1 nights accommodation staying in the teak huts, lunch, evening meal and breakfast the following day before our depature.

As for Kayaking around the island, my son and I set off early in morning in an attempt to get round the island but it was far too rough, and had we had got into diffuculties no one would be any the wiser of our whereabouts.

We werent taken on the dusk walk round the island, as advertised, nor were there any mountain bikes to use.

The meals were adequate. If youre wanting any kind of snacks/alchol I suggest you take your own as it is very limited and very expensive!

Sleeping in the teak huts, situated on the beach, was quite an experience listening to the waves crashing only a few meters away and listening to the wildlife.

Felix Hotel V Oriental Kwai Hotel

    Hiya,

l have stayed at thhe Felix Hotel before, and the only things l like about it was the position and the swimming pool.l posted my rants on this forum before about the Felix so look it up.l will be going to Kanchanaburi again this October and am thinking of staying at the Oriental Kwai Hotel,is it very remote?l would like to stay on a raft, but l do not do `basic`any suggestions for a bit of floating luxury, also any suggestions on restaurants in Kanchanaburi or surrounding area.Cheers..

Felix Hotel V Oriental Kwai Hotel

The Oriental River Kwai Hotel is far from Kanchanaburi centre about 15 kms. There are no restaurants, bars, or any entertainments at night around there. But it is a very nice place to stay.

Felix Hotel V Oriental Kwai Hotel

The Felix is old and tired. Standards have slipped, they%26#39;ve gotten lazy. Oriental Kwai is new and the owners care about their customers - nothing is too much trouble! Yes, its 15km out of town - about 15 minutes drive - but transport can be arranged so easily and you won%26#39;t pay Felix prices too. Breathe in the fresh air in the real Thai countryside. Its no surprise that Oriental Kwai is #1 on Tripadvisor.

  • Bangkok versus Hong Kong

we%26#39;re a couple with no kids heading to Thailand and Hong Kong on our way to Japan. Trying to figure out how to spread our time between the two places. We%26#39;re both very much city people and Bangkok and Hong Kong sound really great to us. (already know Seol and a little bit of Tokyo). Which one should we spend more time in? We are going for about three to four weeks in January. Definetely want to see nature and relax at some beaches too in Thailand, but can%26#39;t really spent hours doing that, so we thought that Phuket sounds ok because of the (interesting?) town it has as well.

were thinking of spending a little over a week in Hong Kong so as to get in two weekends to eat as much dim sum as possible. Is that too long?

a friend told us they didn%26#39;t like Bangkok at all. What are other people%26#39;s experiences?

    Can%26#39;t wait for the food!!

Thanks a lot for your thoughts

    Bangkok versus Hong Kong

I am interested in the responses as well as I will be spending time in both cities.

    Bangkok versus Hong Kong

Everyone has a friend that didn%26#39;t like Bangkok but to me it%26#39;s a remarkable city which has a great and safe buzz.

If you%26#39;re having all that time in Honkers, slip over to Macau for a night or 2 during your stay.

Le Meridien Khao Lak - now I'm really worried!!!!!

Myself and hubby are off to Thailand on 8th Feb, stopping first at the Amari Coral Beach in Phuket for 5ngts, followed by 9ngts at Le Meridien Khao Lak. I%26#39;d seen mixed reviews about Le Meridien when we booked it but was happy to go ahead as the comments were leaning more towards great than godawful. I%26#39;ve looked at the latest reviews this morning though and there%26#39;s more reviews slating the service and staff and now I%26#39;m wondering if I%26#39;ve made a mistake booking it?!?!?! Anyone stayed there and can comment?

Also, is it really that far from civilization that we won%26#39;t be able to eat anywhere other than the hotel? I don%26#39;t mind being secluded as long as we%26#39;re not off out in the sticks with no other options apart from hotel food.....because that%26#39;s not gotten the best of reviews after the Christmas season now!!!

    WHAT SHOULD WE DO?!?!?!?

Le Meridien Khao Lak - now I'm really worried!!!!!

There are some beach restaurants within walking distance of Le Meridien. I think I%26#39;m correct in saying that the hotel does a shuttle to %26#39;Khao Lak Town%26#39; which is in reality a combination ofy Bang Niang and Bang La On, where there are many shops and restaurants. These can be seen on the listings and maps within the shops and restaurant pages at www.mykhaolak.de

For a report on Le Meridien, I%26#39;ll leave that to Alan who is, no doubt, writing a reply as we speak!

Le Meridien Khao Lak - now I'm really worried!!!!!

i did not stay there but passed by. it is islolated and you%26#39;ll need transportation around. the local taxis are quite expensive....no less than 100-150 baht per ride.

i can recommend the Baan khao Lak where we stayed- less fancy but more central (few min walk from town), relaxed and beautiful beach. take the pool/beach villa and you will not be dissapointed

The Le Meridien is a super hotel. We stayed there last April and are returning there in March for 3 weeks. It is true that there are staffing issues, but there are throughout hotels In Khao Lak. So many staff were lost in the Tsunami and there have been so many new resorts opened or refurbished that trained staff are at a premium and training of new staff inevitably takes time.

Though the resort is secluded, some would say remote (it%26#39;s greatest appeal to us!), there are dining options locally - one beach restaurant within 200 metres, the excellent restaurant at the Similana next door and three beach restaurants just beyond that just before the Sarojin. There is a local restaurant opposite the main gate andone further up the main road to the left which has excellent reports.

The shuttle to Khao Lak (100 thb per person each way) runs three times each way from 6pm (about 20 minutes) where there are plenty of restaurants, bars and shops. If you decide to stay out after last shuttle (9m from KL) taxis are about same price or you can hop on the free transport to the Khuk Kak (bar/restaurant inside Le Meridien grounds serving Korean and Indian food and draught Singha at 80thb).

So plenty of options. Out of 19 nights last April we only dined in the hotel 3 times and never paid more than 700 thb total locally for food and beer.

We are booked in for 7 ngihts at the Le Meridien at the end of this week so will let you know how we go. Many thanks to Arandora for all your helpful info - I have taken a list of recommended restaurants etc. Looking forward to sipping my cocktail by the pool!!

Give our regards to K. O if she is still there working on Front Desk (and still singing at the Happy Snapper - a ';must'; visit!) and K.Pen also - if they are tell them Khun Ball%26#39;s friends from England look forward to seein them again in March.

    Have a great time!

    Alan %26amp; Barbara

    Thanks Alan and Barbara

We are really looking forward to the trip. I have seen a couple of recent posts about John Greys trips so having a quick look to see if that is something we should add to our list (growing rapidly and don%26#39;t think we are going to have enough time to do it all). Will say ';hi'; for you and looking forward to sampling all the yummy thai food at the restaurants you have recommended. If you think of anything else we might be interested in would appreciate it. Once again thanks very much for all the info you have provided and will get back and let you know how our trip went.

    Deb

    Ayula

Have you written anything that I can read about the Baan Khao Lak Resort.

We are booked to go in May and apart from Ted there is very little written about the resort.

I have looked on the Khao Lak forum and the german language forum, but would like to hear from some one who has actually stayed there.

    Cheers

    Deb,

One place I%26#39;m sure you will be visiting is the Rim Lay - the beach restaurant near Le Meridien. Please tell the owner, Khai, that Alan (the Manchester United supporter from last year) expects him to be wearing the Manchester United scarf I gave him when we return on 18th March - even though it will be 30C+. I hope his son has ';seen the light'; and changed over from Chelsea! Oh those battered prawns!!

    Alan

Will look out for the Man United scarf (wrong team though, Leeds would be my choice!) Battered prawns sound very tempting so I am sure we will be paying Khai a visit. Will catch up when we return.

    Deb

hi , i%26#39;m just back from x-mas @ Meridien Kaho Lak. I posted a review which i think is balanced. The hotel is a great hotel but there are some issues with service in the restaurants.

Having said that it was x-mas so I imagine when you visit it won%26#39;t be as hectic.

Shuttle in to town every evening is 100bht p/p , juts take 1 way and grab a taxi home which is only 250bht anyway.

In Khao Lak there are plenty of good restaurants such as Viking , Jai , Noms etc

Don%26#39;t worry keep your booking it is a lovely hotel with an amazing beach.

  • what is your best money saving idea
  • cost of ........................

We are coming to Bangkok for the first time in Feb next year. I cant belive how cheap it is to eat out ect. My husband wants to know how much electrical items camcorder, cameras, ect are. If it only cost a few bahts to eat out are these items dirt cheap too?

We went to Florida this summer and bought two watches a Cartier and a Tag Carrera, for a couple of thousand british pounds each. To buy such items in bangkok how much would we be paying? Thank you so much in advance x

    cost of ........................

electric items alot more expensive in Thailand more than USA.

I just move from Thailand to Florida . Here a lot more cheaper

    cost of ........................

    Hi;

Camera, electronic items and electrical stuffs are Cheap in California too. Thailand is a very small market to receive imports .

Some of the expensive electronics sold in Thailand will probably cost more there than what you can find for sale in your country. There may be closeout sales that come up every now and then with good prices, but you have to lug this junk home with you too! Another problem you have is with warranties, some warranties may not be recognized in your country if you need service or repairs.

Be careful of buying fancy watches there are a lot of nice looking fakes for sale all over the place.

    Have a nice holiday.

If it%26#39;s a question of buying a new camera or a camcorder for your holiday, then buy before you leave UK, particularly online. Whilst there is a vast choice of everything and new models appear in Bangkok before they do in UK, the price of the odel you want may not be cheaper. Also bear in mind that you may get a local warranty rather than a Worldwide or European one making warranty repairs difficult if not impossible.

If however you just want to buy something to take home and are prepared to take the risk, go to MBK - a huge shopping complex with floor upon floor of electrical goods, mobile phones, clothes, you name it and a great food court. Do a search for loads of info on MBK and other shop til you drop places.

As for watches, you could probably pick up a Tag and a Cartier for about 15 quid each - copies of course! The real thing? Again you will need to shop around and be prepared to barter even in the authentic shops (as opposed to markets). Depending on models I would have thought you can get ';top end'; watches cheaper than £2000 each.

Yes the food is cheap, but the imported ';luxury'; items and electronics can be expensive.

Generally, I find the ';luxury'; items like parfums and cameras even some electronics to be more expensive then home (Canada). But then again Canada is ALOT cheaper then the UK.

Best buys for electronic is Hongkong. Thailand is not that expensive, but more than the US.

Thank you for your replies x

    Hi;

The USA is Home of all electronic brand names and imports alike . These items are Flood all over the country and very Cheap when they have them on Fire Sale

    safety issue

My daughter is going to be in the perhentian islands and then is considering taking a train through southern Thailand to koh samui. She is concerned that with the political unrest about the safety of taking the train. She will be with a few other american students. I think it would be safe but wanted the advise of others before telling her to go ahead. Their other option would be to return to Kuala lumpur and fly but that is not really in their budget. Thanks for the advice and putting a mom%26#39;s heart at rest!

Good Restaurants on Khoa San road?

Hello, can anyone recommend any good or cool restaurants to try on Khoa San road? I like all types of food.

If so, what do you recommend ordering?

    thanks for your help:)

Good Restaurants on Khoa San road?

Soachingcha is probably less than a half kilometer away. Importfood.com has done a wonderful blog on the area, which includes photos of the shops, the dishes, and even a downloadable pdf map.

    http://importfood.com/saochingcha_guide.html

I would definitely recommend Radna Yod Pak, probably the best I%26#39;ve ever eaten!

    importfood.com/thai_vendors/street_vendor_ra?/a>

Good Restaurants on Khoa San road?

This map will show you the area%26#39;s location, relative to Khaosan Road.

    http://tinyurl.com/3hyqm9

    Curt1591...You rock!!!

Thank you for the maps and weblinks. This is so helpful.

The weblink you sent is so detailed, that I feel like I will have no problem flinding these places and ordering something I know I will enjoy. I love how it also has the recipes for the different foods, so you can see what is in a dish.

The map you sent is pretty cool. I did not know about the Siam Nirimit show in Bangkok, until I came across it on your map. I went to the link provided and it looks spectacular. I think I will try to fit this in. It reminds me alot of the cirque du soliel shows here in Vegas. Great entertainment venue!

Thank you very much for your insight!

There are plenty of outstanding places to eat in Banglamphu, the district in which Khao San Road is only an insignificant street. This is a popular part of town, not just for foreign backpackers, but for ';arty'; or bohemian Thais.

Hemlock at 56 Phra Athit Road is very popular, and the neigbouring restaurants also have good menus.

Chot Chitr, on soi Prang Pu Thorn, off Tanao Road, is widely considered one of the best street-food eateries in Bangkok if not in all of Thailand.

There are a number of funky little restaurants on Samsen Road near the Banglamphu canal.

And there%26#39;s a great seafood place on the river near the Pinklao Bridge.

If you don%26#39;t consider yourself very adventurous, the guest houses on Soi Chana Songkhram between Soi Rambutri and Pha Athit Road offer better-than-average somewhat-dumbed-down Thai food, and decent western specialities, although expensive in comparison with Thai places. Try Happy House at #46 and Wild Orchid at #8. It%26#39;s a nice atmosphere on a narrow, quaint lane.

Although it doesn%26#39;t have Cirque%26#39;s ';bizarre'; factor, it%26#39;s definitely up there with some of Vegas%26#39; bigger productions.

Try for a deal from your hotel%26#39;s tour desk. Some will offer it discounted. Also, arrive early so that you can tour the grounds. Outside, they have a Thai village which is quite interesting.

    Bill2p:

thank you for the reccomendations. i am glad to see you consider some restaraunts ';outstanding'; in the area. Makes me excited try the food! I will keep your list with me when I am there for reference.

    Thanks!!

    Curt1591:

thanks again for the great advice. Online it states the price is $50USD to see the show. That seems quite high. So, thanks for recommending I check with my hotel to see if they can offer a discounted price on the show. It looks pretty cool.

We will plan to show up early before the show to check out the village as you suggested.

Don%26#39;t ';expect'; a discounted admission, but it doesn%26#39;t hurt to ask. The 1,500 baht does include a dinner buffet. When negotiating any deal, be sure to keep that in mind.

We went quite a while ago. At that time, I wasn%26#39;t too impressed with the buffet. I have read some people giving it good reviews. Maybe it%26#39;s improved?

Just north of KSR, you might try Riverside Bangkok%26#39;s dinner cruise. It%26#39;s great food (ala carte / cooked to order), and offers great views of Bangkok. Unless you drink yourself silly, you should easily get by under 500 baht PP.

    Riverside Bangkok%26#39;s on my map.

    HEMLOCK-

    I seriously loved this place-

Give Khao san a miss, I cannot state how awful khao san road is- if you wanna feel like an american in disneyland, go there, but if not, head over to phra athit for a more neighbourhood feel to the restaurants.

  • Villa Kiranya

    Hi there

Has anyone stayed at or have any information on the private villa Villa Kiranya?

    Many thanks

    Villa Kiranya

Try this thread I started when searching for info, assuming it%26#39;s the same villa, there was some good advice given.

    tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowTopic-g293918-i7560-k1?/a>

I didn%26#39;t end up staying there as for some reason during communication with the owners imho I didn%26#39;t find them that helpful or welcoming. That%26#39;s not to say they aren%26#39;t, just the feeling I got with the emails.

I ended up booking a villa in maenam instead.

    Villa Kiranya

    thanks much

like you, we are about the relaxing at the villa for a few days and trekking to our beach/destination of choice either by day or at night. I am thinking of it much like our trip to Santorini when we did much of the same thing. Our correspondence with the owners has been great. Much appreciated.

  • rajas tailors nana entertainment plaza

    hopefully somebody can help,

i sent a cheque for some shirts which they acknowledged they received approximately 1 month ago, however, for the past ten days i have been trying to email Bobby at the same email address i had been using but the emails keep saying delivery failed , does anybody know if rajas is still open ?? it is directly across the road from the nana hotel , right beside the nana entertainment complex

hopefully somebody can help me with this

    thank you in advance

    rajas tailors nana entertainment plaza

And has he cashed that check yet?

    rajas tailors nana entertainment plaza

it was a bankers draft that i sent and i am sure that once he acknowledged receipt that it was definitely cashed, i was also wondering if maybe there is an internet problem over there considering the present unrest.

hopefully somebody who lives near may take the trouble to find out for me if they are still operating and maybe they could enquire for me why the delay

    i live in hope

is Rajas the full name of the tailor?

    Jules

No problems with the internet in general.

I have heard nothing re Raja%26#39;s which would indicate that they have gone out of business.

Why would you pay before you receive the goods?

Since you order from outside the country I assume you have a good contact to him. In this case he should not expect payment before delivery

If the deal has gone wrong, at least Raja%26#39;s isn%26#39;t a highend place where you have lost a lot of money.

Why not pick up the phone and call Raja%26#39;s????

if i had the phone number ... i would , thanks for the input

jeminma, i purhased suits and shirts there in person in 2007 and 2008 and when i arrived home was so impressed with the latest stuff that i ordered more through the internet from the email address Bobby had given me, i certainly would not insinuate as you have done that it is not high end as i and friends think the work is of a very good standard, hence the follow up order. you should not really run down a place if you have no first hand experience as the internet is a powerful tool and it can do serious damage to a business with unfounded comments such as you made

dubguy, as an expat living in BKK I know Raja%26#39;s. I also know who the highend tailors in BKK are.

Not many expats would consider any of the tailors around Sukhumvit as %26#39;highend shops%26#39;.

However, we all have different demands and expectations.

02-2538379 - Raja%26#39;s Fashion, Soi Nana. They have a website and there you can find the phone no. So easy.

thanks for the help jemina will let you know how i get on , i agree taste is a personal thing so i can only reiterate that i was more than happy with the goods already received

Got a package Six Senses Samui & want to sell very cheap

    Need advice where to stay??

Hi, I am 27 and will be traveling alone to Ko Phangan for NYE 2009 and will be attending the FMP.

I plan on staying 5-6 days.

I love the beach and want a very clean swimming beach. I like being social but also want time to read and hike just take in the beauty.

People have said that Thong Nai Pan Noi is beautiful beaches...but is this too far to get a taxi ride back from the FMP.

I want the beach, but dont want to seclude myself from other travelers. But after the party, I surely dont want to be surrounded in an atmosphere of burnt out, drugged out travelers.

    can someone please help me...

wants to party for the holiday, but also wants peaceful beauty beaches, around normal, not strung out people????

    THANKS!!!

    What telephone ??

We will be touring Thailand for 4 months starting 17th November.

What advise can you give with regard to telephones...

    1. Should I bring mobile from UK and buy a Thai sim card

    or

    2. Is it easier to buy a Thai %26#39;phone.

I want to make calls and text messages to UK, and the UK back to me. I will also use the %26#39;phone to make internal calls in Thailand.

Can you recommend a suitable company that will give coverage thoughout most regions of Thailand, please?

    What telephone ??

You can bring your mobile phone here and buy a new sim card. But if you want to buy a new phone, it%26#39;s not expensive here.

All companies are almost the same. You can choose any for example True Move, AIS, DTAC.

    Good luck!

    What telephone ??

What you can do is bring a mobile with you and buy a simcard at the airport in Thailand.

They are pretty cheap, I think you have already one for 100 Baht.

Some of the providers are : True, AIS 12Call, The happy sim cards are just a few.

You can basically stop at the airport and walk into a telecom shop and you will find one that will suit you.

    Thanks for that.

You are all so helpful ! :-)

    Wonder if You can help

1/ What is the weather usualy like first 2 weeks in October will I get some sun.

2/Is there plenty of places that do laundry in the main strip of Chewang I will be staying at The Amari Palm Reef Resort.

    Weather and Laundry

weather should not be too bad at this time but as always nothing is gauranteed. I think that you will definatly fare better than very late october November and December.

Loads and loads of places for laundry. should be looking at around 50baht kilo ironed.

The amari is a lovely hotel and we have stayed there 3 times. Far enough removed from the main madness but easily walkable to where the action is.

Try the beach at night for food music and drinks.

    Their resuarant Prego is fab.

Just slightly down the beach on the bend is OP bungalows good for a well priced beer and food during the day.

    enjoy I know you will.

Staying at the Fern Palace for three days/renting scooter?

Will it be relatively easy for me to rent a scooter for three days while in Chiang Mai so that I can get to and from the hotel..how late are taxis usually available if I want to enjoy the nightlife

Staying at the Fern Palace for three days/renting scooter?

    Howdy !!!

I%26#39;m not sure you mentioned Fern Palace or Fern Paradise. I never heard about Fern Palace.

If it%26#39;s Fern Paradise, a little bit out of town. No scooter to rent. Only motercycle or bicycle. But Fern Paradise it%26#39;s not good to ride the bike , moterbike is ok.

For hotel to enjoy nightlife in town, quite hard to find taxi or TUKTUK but from town back to hotel it%26#39;s more easy but pay around 100 baht or more.

Staying at the Fern Palace for three days/renting scooter?

    thank you...i meant Fern Paradise...

i am sure we will be ok

    Confused!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Hi,

I’m totally confused about where we should stay! 4 adults coming to Bangkok for the first time. We will be staying 4 nights in Oct before we go to Phuket. We would like to stay somewhere close to shopping, tourist attractions, includes breakfast and clean. It will be my mum’s birthday when we get there, any ideas on how we can make it special.

Also, what are the must do’s/see’s in Bangkok. I know we are not there for long hence I don’t really want to waste time wondering around.

    Thanks

    Confused!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Go to Wotif.com and book anything in the Sukhumvit, Ploenchit or Siam areas that matches your budget and catches your fancy.

Otherwise you have to tell us more about what you%26#39;d like to pay and what you%26#39;d expect to get. There are literally thousands of hotels and guest houses in Bangkok from super-cheap to super-high-end.

    Confused!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sukhumvit probably sounds liek the place you want to stay then..but again, whats your budget like?

As above, it depends on your budget. But a good idea may be to book a table near the window in revolving restaurant in Bayoke Sky Hotel. You%26#39;ll see wonderfuk view of BKK at night. A good area for shopping is Siam square and surround, well connected by BTS with a lot of places.

We are travelling to Bangkok for the first time in April next year and have booked the Pullman King Power Hotel. It is only about a year old and sounds fantastic(check out the reviews on TA). It is close to Siam, where you have the Siam and MBK shopping centres. We thought the hotel was very reasonably priced too. If you want something special for your mum%26#39;s birthday check out Loy Nava dinner cruises(you can pre-book and they will pick you up from your hotel) or Lebua State Tower has an open air restaurant overlooking the city(for a premium). I guess for your first time, as ours, you%26#39;ll want to visit the Grand Palace / Wat Pho, perhaps take a klong tour or visit Jim Thompsons house, as well as shopping at MBK or Siam. Or maybe visit Chatachuk weekend market....just a few ideas for you to look at. Another hotel that I could recommend is the Landmark at Sukhumvit. My uncle stayed here recently and said it was great!

    Thank you everyone,

I have looked at the Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit and FuramaXclusive Asoke! Both are expensive but the reviews are really good.

I would like to spend £50 each per night! Any other ideas.

    Hi;

The Majestic Grande is another good hotel in Sukhumvit area which run about 3000 baht a night.

    Hello there

I recently stayed at the Millennium Hilton and it is gorgeous. We travel 2 Bangkok every year and we have tried several properties and really love this one the most. It is right next to the river, they have a free hotel boat which will take you to skytrain station within 5-10 min. From there it is only 5-10 min to the city. Sky train is connected to all major shopping malls. Very very handy. They have many outleys, breakfast is served on ground floor, choice to sit inside or outside on the terrace and enjoy breathtaking river views. If you go there, make sure you go upto 360 bar which is on the top floor with amazin views. We stayed in Executive suite which is the best....All the best...

Hi...have seen Vie hotel, (an accor hotel) it is a 4 * which is opening in oct 2008, for around £55 per night. It looks nice %26amp; only 5 min walk from shopping area

We stayed at the Pathumwan Princess in January of this year and liked it so much we are returning in January of next year on our way to Australia and New Zealand. We are paying £121 per night for an execu plus suite. This is for 3 people and includes breakfast. We booked through SAWADEE.

Is there anything to do if Kho Lak?

    Hi All

We are staying in there for three nights towards the end of January and are fortunate enough to be staying the the Sarojin. Anyone been?

Is there anything to do as Ive heard is is a very quiet place?

Is there anything to do if Kho Lak?

The Sarojin is a very nice hotel on a great, secluded beach. There are 3 local cheap but good beach restaurants within 100 metres, the restaurant at the Similana just further up then another beach restaurant around the headland just before you reach the Le Meridien.

Other than that it%26#39;s a shuttle or taxi to Khao Lal Town about 20 minutes away where there are plenty of restaurants, bars and shops.

Is there anything to do if Kho Lak?

La On Village is thecentre of the Khao Lak. Only a kilometre or so in length, its also home to the greatest collection of restaurants in Phang Nga province. If you want elegant, the five-star hotels will impress. La On Village offers a much more casual environment at much better prices. Lots of Thai choices, and nearly as many European options, ensure a varied experience. Two of the best and oldest Thai restaurants in Khao Lak are right next door to each other on the main street C Jai Seafood and Khao Lak Seafood. Not far away, youll also find Tiffys Caf, Ruen Mai, Dee Seafood, Sala Thai, Noms Family Restaurant, Everyday Kitchen and many others C including evening street vendors. For international favourites C burgers, pizza, potatoes, cheese C try Viking Steak House, OConners Irish Pub, Freestyle, Eule, or Mr Indian Food.

Coffee shops are also well represented in La On Village, with my favourite, Mrs Coffea, Stempfer Caf, and Coffee Arthit serving steaming cups of this beverage along with tasty morsels to nibble on.

A short walk down a small hill and youre on Nang Thong Beach. The restaurants in the resorts C notably Ton-Thong Restaurant (Suwan Palm Resort), Nang Thong Bay Restaurant (Nang Thong Bay Resort), and Green Beach Restaurant (Green Beach Resort) C are perfect for romantic sunset cocktails and dinner

Just up the road a few miles you get to Bang Niang. On the main street you have The Takieng, Dao Thong and Kiaw Niaw restaurants, plus many bars. Off the main street and towards the beach theres The Candle, La Flora Resort and Spa. Nearby is Touch Beach Restaurant at Mukdara Beach Resort. Chong Fah Restaurant has the luxury of being close to not only the sea, but massage beachfront massage huts too. Amanusa, Tonson, Coconut Grove, and Ayara are in the dinner-and-a-view category.

In the small maze of meandering streets just off the beach, youll find Ladda Restaurant, Joes Steakhouse, Amsterdam Restaurant, Talay Thai Seafood Restaurant, and the German Bakery. Some serve Thai food, some focus on hearty international fare, and some a little of both; the name of the establishment is a surefire way to tell which is which (ambiguous names generally mean ambiguous menus).

The bar scene is Khao Lak is very mellow. With plenty of places to fulfil just about any excess-filled fantasy down the road in Phuket, Khao Lak focuses instead on good clean family fun. The undoubted champion of late night fun is the Happy Snapper, where a great live band entertains a crowd as diverse and colourful as the mural on the ceiling.

By no means the lone option, its joined by Freestyle Bar, Marlin Bar, Eule Beer Garden, OConners Irish Pub, Tarzan Bar, and Mex Biker Bar are all nearly within spitting distance. Ska Bar is in the centre of town, and consists of a small drink hut and open-air tables in the middle of a street-side shopping plaza; theres no better place to people watch with a cold brew while your significant other rummages for the perfect souvenir for your relatives. D.Time is across the street, or head a bit more southerly for pool, sports, and divers (and the people who love them) at Scuba Groupie, located in the Khao Lak Grand City building.

In Bang Niang you can find your favourite sporting events at Gecko Sports Bar %26amp; Grill, live Thai music at 813 Degrees Bar, pool tables at P%26amp;Y Bar, and great drinks at Piranha Bar.

You can also enjoy a drink in a local style bar such as Song%26#39;s Bar, located 150 meters on the left after you entered the street near the 7/11 facing the Thai Army boat brought inland during the tsunami. The bar is popular among divers and expats.

Like dining and drinking, shopping options number in the dozens rather than the hundreds. The souvenir shops in La On Village come to life as the afternoon grows late and cools off.

Some are bursting at the seams with inventory C offering just about every trinket imaginable C while others specialize in, say, tee shirts or beach gear.

Art stores, though not as prevalent as CD and DVD stalls, feature some of the more impressive gifts available C like silk wall hangings, wooden knickknacks, and paintings.

For a complete makeover, from the bridge of your nose to the tips of your toes, stop by Top Charoen Optical or KT Optic for a new pair of designer eyeglasses, Monty the Tailor for custom suits, shirts, and dresses, and then enjoy a massage C foot, oil, or traditional Thai C at any of the places in town.

Small convenience stores, including (if not especially) 7-11, are ubiquitous; finding a cheap bottle of water or a tube of sun cream wont be a problem.

La On Village also has a couple internet cafes C useful for bragging in real time C and camera stores where you can have pictures developed, pick up extra film, or transfer photos from memory card to disc. ATMs and exchange booths are also readily available.

    Hello

Yes the Sarojin is in a fairly quiet location but on a fantastic beach. January is a fantastic time to come to Khao Lak. There is actually loads to do if you want and places to go and see.Have a look at www.khaolaklovers.com for extra info.. I have not stayed at the Sarojin but a bit further along at the Le Meridien but from what i have heard you will not want to leave the place. You will be able to book trips at the Sarojin and also in Khao Lak town if there is any that you want to do.

  • First trip to Chiang Mai..Please Help..

Hi, I will be leaving to Chiang Mai around 11am on 5 Oct with my mum. Since this is my first trip to Chiang Mai, I really need help!

How much the taxi in THB from Airport to Centara Duangtawan?

We will go to Doi Suthep and followed by Sunday Market at the first day. Second day, we will go to Chiang Rai and Golden triangle. Third day, we will go to Elephant farm and orchid farm. Is the agenda alright? Can I go to Long Neck tribe when i go to Doi Suthep?

I would like to bring my mum to eat great lobster and massage. Any recommendation?

Am I need to book any ground tour before i go or i can book it when i arrive at hotel?

Thanks in advance if someone can answer my question...

    Thank you. Thank you.

First trip to Chiang Mai..Please Help..

    Hi StarFish Mal.

Not quite sure if Chiang Mai is the place for %26#39;great lobster%26#39; maybe a local could advise. I eat lots of crab when I%26#39;m in Ao Nang (Krabi) or Koh Samui but I never eat seafood up North. Its just me I feel better eating seafood when I know its been caught locally and is pretty fresh.

First trip to Chiang Mai..Please Help..

Taxi from airport to Centara Duangtawan cost 120 baht.

How many people in your group ?? Only you %26amp; mom ?? How old is your mom ? Can she walk well ??

If you come 4 people , I think you%26#39;d better rent the van with driver. They will take you the places you want and send back to hotel or after dinner depends on company and the deal. It%26#39;s a private tour that you can enjoy and spend time as long as you like it.

Can%26#39;t see long neck on the way to Doi Suthep.

If you come only 2 people, you can buy day tour from hotel or shop from Ta Pae Road. There are many tour companies but most of then are the same route.

First day arrive 11 am, check in first, then go to Doi Suthep. In the evening take a long walk and enjoy shopping at Sunday Night Market.

Second Day - The whole day to Chiangrai. It%26#39;s a long drive 3 hours with non-stop. You have to leave early and come back late.

Third day - Elephant camp %26amp; Orchid farm.

Your trip sounds rushed but doable.

You can book your trips when you arrive but you will have to arrange them as soon as you check into your guesthouse or hotel.

We went to the Mae Sa Elephant Farm about 12Ks North of CM and really enjoyed it.

Pics and stories of our trip here ... www.thebobmarsh.com

I went to Chiang Mai earlier this year and we hired a driver for one full day and he took us to where we wanted. We just walked outside our hotel and there%26#39;s several guys just sitting around and ask where you plan to go today. Bargain with them, we got our driver for about $20 US for one day.

Agree with swtamour, you will not have any problems

organising Tours. Most hotels have tour desks also.

    Starfish:

You might want to read my report on this forum and the Chiang Rai forum, under ';Broder%26#39;s Trip Report.'; We stayed in Chaing Rai/Golden Triangle, visited the long neck tribe, stayed in Chiang Mai etc.

I do agree with the prior post, that Chaing Mai may not be your best place to eat great lobster. Maybe I%26#39;m just missing something, but we have been there a few times and I have never thought of it aa a place for great seafood.

    Have a wonderful trip.

    Broder

Hi, everybody. Thanks for all your valuable information. Really appreciated that. I will write a report when i am back. Really feel excited right now. :)

If you want great lobster, you will have to go to Nova Scotia, Canada!!

The seafood around Chiang Mai is not so good - they are farmed prawns and when you see where they are farmed it pretty much turns you off prawns! In the south, the fish are salt water caught and much better, although nothing compared to Canadian caught fish with the colder water! I never did see any lobster advertized.

  • What is the best area to stay in Bangkok

    Hi there

Can anyone tell me the best place to stay in Bangkok?

I am coming over with my husband and looking for somewhere close to the action either via transport or walking. Access to shopping and things to do.

    Any ideas?

What is the best area to stay in Bangkok

Get a hotel on Sukhumit Road between Soi%26#39;s 4 to 24 this gives you walking access to a couple of skytrain stations and the underground. The skytrain will take you to all the shopping areas. The Skytrain links them all and yOu can jumP off at Siam Square and change to the Silom Line for the Patpong nightmarkets.

The underground will take you to Chatuchak the weekend market well worth a visit.

Real eAsy to get around Bangkok as long as you stay silom side of the river, the Best hotels such as Oriental are fabulous but on the wrong side of the river for easy access to central Bangkok

What is the best area to stay in Bangkok

Sukhumvit Road or Siam area will do just fine! This way you can make use of the Skytrain. The Skytrain is an overhead transportation service that can connect you with many popular tourist spots. The Skytrain connects with the subway to get you to the national train station. The Skytrain also has a stop at Ekamai for the bus station.

Lots of shopping, restaurants, travel agencies for tours and street vendors available in this area, especially lower Sukhumvit from Soi 2 down to somewhere near Soi 13. The Skytrain has a stop for Chatachak and MBK.

    Map of Sukhumvit area.

    guidetothailand.com/maps-thailand/bangkok-up?/a>

When you want suggestions for hotels mention how much you want to pay per night for a room to narrow down the suggestions. Hotel rooms with air start around 600 baht and can go up to over 6000 baht per night.

    Some Sukhumvit Road hotels:

    thaiwebsites.com/hotels-sukhumvit-bangkok.asp

    Another list of hotels:

    http://www.sawadee.com/hotels/bangkok.html

If you want fewer bars around and still be able to access the Skytrain real easy check out the Asia Hotel. The Asia is right at a Skytrain stop. Easy walk to shopping on Phetchaburi Road.

    http://www.asiahotel.co.th/asia_bangkok.htm

    Good luck.

Definitely the lower Suk for pubs/discos/shopping/restaurants, easy access to skytrain.

    Hi;

Here is another Vote for the famous lower soi Sukhumvit. I have been traveled to Bangkok 3x in the last 2years and shall be back Bangkok this November,2008 at the same hotel in the corner soi Nana and Sukhumvit road. I Did look around and searching better place to stay when I was in Bangkok ,But None was found to fit my own taste and the convienence of the lower soi Sukhumvit. I can travel to most of interested places in Bangkok by using the BTS and MRT

Got me curious. What hotel do you use? We are making our 5th trip to SEA, but first to Thailand and would appreciate your input. Thank you for your time, jingles, Martinez, Cal

    Local Thai Wedding

We have been invited to a local girl%26#39;s wedding somewhere north of Kho Lak in November when we will be in Phuket but have never been to a Thai wedding before.

Wondered if anyone out there can give us some advice:

    *what does one wear?

*what is a suitable present or is money the way to go and if so how much?

*Is it an all day affair going into the night? Is one expected to be there for the whole time?

*Should we take our own drinks?

    * Will they be offended if we bring our taxi driver to the wedding. He has met Im before when we visited her home. She wants us to stay at her home but we do not wish to impose. I guess being honest my wife wasn%26#39;t too keen on the bathroom and toilet facilities so best we do not stay the night.

Any help would be appreciated as we want to do the right thing.

    Should be a great experience

    Docker Kev

    Local Thai Wedding

    Answer to your questions:-

    1. You should wear smart attire,i.e, shirt with slack etc. But no jeans, please.

    2. Money would be good and Baht 500-1,000 as a gift is a normal practice.

    3. You don%26#39;t need to be at the wedding for the whole time. You may give her an excuse when you think you have to go.

    4. Don%26#39;t worry about the drinks. There%26#39;s a lot during this celebration.

    Enjoy your stay in Thailand.

    Local Thai Wedding

When you give the money, place it in an envelope with your names written on the front. You hand it to the bride on arrival. Don%26#39;t take your own drinks, as that would offend.

Agree with Dragonc, Don%26#39;t take your own drinks. If you take your own drinks, they would think that they don%26#39;t complete to take care their guests.

If she has ever invited you to stay at her home, it seems like she think that you%26#39;re her close friend, so don%26#39;t worry about bringing your driver there.

If she give you invitation card, put the money in its envelope. If she doesn%26#39;t give you, put it in a envelope as Dragonc said, and the envelope should be pink or red color.

Thanks you guys that information is a great help.

    Some more question:

Do weddings generally start in the morning, afternoon or evening ?

Is the format a church service followed by a reception as we do in western countries ?

If we were to leave early to travel back at what point in proceedings would that not offend?

    DockerKev

It varies. The actual wedding often (but not always) takes place in the morning at a private home with family and close friends, with a reception in the afternoon or evening at a hotel. If you%26#39;ve had an invite, it depends on how close you are to the family as to whether its for the whole thing, or just the reception (more likely). And the colour of the cash envelope really doesn%26#39;t matter; most people use plain white.

I got the impression that they last all day and you can sort of show up and leave as you please.

I think you are not supposed to wear black also.

    Smart casual is fine.

Money is the appropriate gift. $10 AUD is fine. You do not habve to show that you are a big shot by giving more. DO NOT hand it to the bride when you arrive! You will find there is a big box near the entrance to the reception, house etc. Put the money in the envelope containing your invitation and place it in the box.

The family will be lined up at the entrance and you will be offered a glass of whisky, usually Johnny Walker black. It is polite to accept, drink it and hand back the glass. Wai the family and the bride and groom when you arrive.

It would be impolite to bring your taxi driver unless he/she has been invited.

You can leave pretty much anytime after the food.

Definitely DO NOT take your own drinks; this would be insulting.

Regarding dress code, please do not wear black. This can be offen offensive as we Thai traditionally wear black to funerals only.

    Kev,

I can agree with the advice given. We were at a wedding in Khao Lak earlier in the year. We were a little apprehensive, at first feeling like gatecrashers! However, this feeling soon disappeared and we had a great time. You will find everyone is very friendly. I still smile when I look at the photograph of us with the bride and groom and their families!

Totally agree to avoid black clothing.

Now the color of the cash envelope seems like doesn%26#39;t matter in Thailand, but there are many locals live in Khoa Lak, Ta Kua Pa, my hometown and nearby still hold on this tradition as usual. They would feel luck when you bring red tone color come in their wedding party or their house especially if they are descendant of original locals there. Most locals here usually use plain white envelope for ordination and funerals.

    Where is Everybody

Posted on: 12:44 am, yesterday Save

    Hi all,

This is our 3rd visit to Patong Beach and we have been here now for 3 days and there is about 1/4 the amount of people as there normaly is for this time of year!!!

The locals say that many people have been scared off by the protests and i am sure thats true but there realy is no sign of anything unusual except for the ammount of people. We toured around yesterday and spent time in Phuket town and still nothing is happening there either.

We are having a ball, the weather is very hot and we have had 2 sunny days and one overcast with a little rain.

We ate at Nickys Handle Bar last night (Thanks Cathy %26amp; Tiff) and i can%26#39;t belive we have never been there before, we have a great feed and a few drinks and Nicky even shouted us a couple of drinks ( great guy).

We have had a few sessions at the Quokka Bar already and when David, Gai %26amp; Elle found out we were here they came to meet with us even though they are on holidays and off to Bali today. A great night was had by all and they are such wonderfull people.

For anyone that has cancelled or is thinking about canceling becasue of what has happened i urge to to reconsider so these beautiful don%26#39;t have to suffer any more loss. Life is as usual here.....

    Cheers, Pete.

    Where is Everybody

    Hi Pete,

I%26#39;m so disappointed that we%26#39;re not in Phuket as planned at the moment to catch up with you guys.

You sound as though you%26#39;re enjoying yourselves, keep it up!

We%26#39;ll be back for the Vegetarian Festival on a quick trip, then back in November, staying %26#39;til March, I%26#39;m looking forward to that!

    Where is Everybody

    Pete, Pete, Pete!!! lol....

Dont spoil it for us, I like less people.... Now got to say as well at this point I am typing one handed. Silly me decided to make fush and chups (for our kiwi friends visiting) and severly burnt my hand.

Ross even called an ambo as I was in so much pain (and yes having our friends over we have been drinking!!!) All ok now, got fingies all taped up!!!

One thing I learnt from the ambo%26#39;s is never treat a burn with ice. Good tip for those who are sunburnt.

Running water guys for burns and sunburn never ever apply ice no matter how great it feels.

    Wen

Wen my dear, stop thinking about your holiday and concentrate on what you are doing!! You don%26#39;t have to get a ';tan'; before you get there :)

Seriously Wen, I hope your not in too much pain and it heals soon. It%26#39;s not your drinking hand is it???

Pete thanks for that. I would not cancel my holiday for the world. I know how safe it is there. Glad youyr having a great time, have a cocktail or 4 for me please :)

    Cheers

    Tink

    Wendy.......dear oh dear.

    You are a wally.

    Get well soon.

Pete, did you catch up with Joe? I%26#39;ll be around Patong later on today. Will give you a call.

Looks like another nice day today. Nice breeze, good for sailing!

    Bye,

    Mark.

Well, if that is how it is, then it sounds good for tourists to travel, nice and quiet - just about right for bargaining costs down etc..

Keep having a great time Pete %26amp; Jane, say hello to everyone at Nickys if you go back there. Dont eat to much, drink to much or shop to much.

    Cathy

    Great news. Thanks Pete.

Cathy is here too ;-) When will you go to Thailand again?

Wendy, Wendy, Wendy, you crazy woman! I hope your hand feels better soon.

Tink, when it comes to drinking, I%26#39;m betting Wendy%26#39;s ambidextrous.

    Quadbidextrous.

    She could use her feet.

If anyone says pentidextrous I don%26#39;t want to know.

    Mark.
