average taxi fares......

Hello -

Can anyone give me advice on what to expect for regular or average taxi fares from the BTS: NANA area to the following locations:

ChinaTown

Ko Sahn Road

Jim Thompson House

BKK airport (mid evening)

Chatuchak Market

Banyan Tree Hotel

Is there anywhere (main sites or attractions)that are just easier to go by taxi?

This is just in case we do not use BTS or subway or boat or walk. I understand that I should insist on the meter and that traffic may change the situation. I am just looking for guidelines.

Thank you so much!!

average taxi fares......

Its always a good idea to use BTS/MRT/Boat where ever possible rather than taxi, as its usually much faster and cheaper (and more scenic). Jim Thompson House is right by National Stadium station, and Chatuchak next to Morchit station.

Taxis have a meter fall starting at 35 baht and the meter works on a combination of both distance and stoptime (waiting in traffic), but fares will be a fraction of anything you might pay in the US. Trip to the airport is goingg to be around 400 baht from Nana, plus 70 baht in expressway tolls. Chinatown maybe 100 or so baht. Banyan Tree during the middle of the day under 100, but in the evening it could be 150-200.

average taxi fares......

Chinatown (taxi is probably unavoidable) 80-100 baht.

Khao San Road, ca 80 baht (also a taxi ride probably necessary although you could use the Saen Saep canal boat for about 15 baht and walk 10-15 minutes.)

Jim Thompson House, about 60 baht (better by BTS)

BKK - 300 baht (220 baht fare, 70 baht tolls)

Chatuchak - 80-100 baht (better by BTS or MRT)

Banyan Tree ca 60 baht

Also remember if there is 3 -4 of you, the taxi fares may work out to be the same or less then taking the BTS/MRT.

example. BTS to Jatujak is 40-45. if 2persons looking at B90. Almost the same as a taxi.

AS usual I get great advice in advance of trip

THANK YOU very much!!

Hi we%26#39;re just back from Bangkok (2nd visit) and I must say it is sometimes hard to find a taxi that will use the meter. It is hot and tiring and we often just agreed on a price of 100 baht to take us almost anywhere within the city. I know they should use the meter but we were fine paying 100 baht which is just over $3 aus!

The BTS never has traffic!

If a taxi driver does not turn on the meter, get out. The next taxi will be happy to take you for the metered fare. If a driver agrees to 100 baht, then you can be sure the metered fare would be half that.

I have recently returned from Bangkok having stayed at the Banyan Tree Hotel. Traffic in the city is horrendous. We were stuck in traffic for 45 minutes for a journey of a few miles. Avoid taxi if possible. A lot of them refused to use their meter which should register an initial charge of 35 bahts plus additional cost of time and mileage. Use the Skytrain which will take you to most of the inner city areas. It is quick,,efficient and cheap. A day pass will cost you only 120 bahts (about 4 US dollars). There is also the undergroud metro which is also efficient and cheap. If you have to use a taxi insist on the use of meter or else the driver may charge you whatever he wants specially for tourists. You can also use boat taxi which is very pleasant. We used it to get to the Grand Palace and China Town from Banyan Tree.

Avoid Tuk Tuk transport. The drivers are well known for taking tourists to shops and tailors to get commissions before you get to your destinations.

Hope this info is useful. Have a nice holiday. Bangkok has a lot to offer

Melbdream, I am sorry to say that it is people like you who encourage the Rip-Off Taxi drivers, you must not accept non metered rides, if everyone refused to pay over the top fares then the problem would go away.

There are many people who can%26#39;t afford 3 dollars, think about other people and don%26#39;t be so selfish.

Labaggies

I don%26#39;t really see it as selfish. In fact I understood that Thai taxi drivers actually earn one of the lowest wages and therefore need every cent! P.S. I also tip wherever I can.
