food and drink

Hi we%26#39;re travelling to bangkok on the 1st of october for 3 nights staying at the majestic grande, then flying onto Phuket staying at the Cape Panwa resort.

We%26#39;re taking about 75,000 thai baht between the two of us do you think this will be enough for us cause we%26#39;re gonna eat out every night and we were not sure of how much food is in either Bangkok or Phuket. Any feedback would be great.

You can eat street food (safe) from about 20 baht up, lots of small Thai restaurants were you can get a good meal from 300 baht upwards.

Bars (british type) tend to be the same price as in the UK burger/Chips etc 250 baht up.

A good cheap place to eat is the voucher food courts in the shopping centres. Try MBK or any other shopping centre.

There is a chain of restaurants called Number 8 Ramen noodles, stir frys etc where 2 people can eat from 300 baht up.

75,000 is about £1300 GB so you should be ok

Food is pretty cheap in Thailand. Besides the info in the previous post you can also eat at lunch counters in some supermarkets like Tops and Foodland. Of course there are lots of McDonalds, Burger Kings and KFC%26#39;s selling meals cheaper than what you will find back home. Lots of supermarkets available where you can buy instant coffee, lunch meat and bread, etc. Numerous Seven Eleven type stores for snacks and water, etc. You won%26#39;t starve in Thailand unless you sew our lips together!

I hope you are not planning on changing your money over to Thai baht in YOUR COUNTRY because you will get a rate of exchange that is less than what you can get in Thailand! Thailand uses real banks and mini banks and they are all over the place - including at the airport! The rate is set daily and most of the banks will have about the same rate. Debit cards with national affiliations will work in Thai ATM%26#39;s too! (No problem with Visa and MasterCard. Notify your bank that you will be overseas or the ATm may deny the withdrawal.)

Bank rates are set daily:

Phuket will be a little more expensive than Bangkok and Pattaya will be cheaper than both places. When you need recommendations for hotels mention how much you want to spend per night (don%26#39;t say middle price, cheap or economy - use a baht figure.)

Good luck.

Avoid hotel eateries and chain restaurants and you%26#39;ll eat like royalty. Even places like Burger King are expensive by Thai standards.

Many Thais eat out, or eat take away much of the time. Just pay attention to where they are eating and follow suit.

As mentioned, the food courts are very economical. Typically, you buy coupons and echange them for the items you buy. Return unused coupons for a refund. A typical, filling lunch, for me and my wife, will run between 100~150 baht.

In comparison, a ';set'; meal, at most fast food joints, will run just under 100 baht. Some fast food%26#39;s even more expensive.

Alcohol can eat up your money in Thailand as quickly as it can anywhere else. Keep the partying under control and your money will go quite far.

Stay away from most western style food places and ends up being cheap as chips.

If you are a guy... may-be. And if you are a backpacker that increases your chances a little more. NOTE: Guys usually spend their money on other things... (it can be cheaper for a guy.)

But if you are traveling with a girl... to be honest, you are really cutting it a bit too short splitting this between two people. You will get to know your budget as you spend (...or can%26#39;t spend.) Everyone discovers their own budget.

It%26#39;s different for me because I%26#39;m female. I say this because I always take 60,000 Baht ($2,000. US) for a month. Sounds like a lot, huh. Well, with all of this, my daily limit is only 1900 Baht. Some tours alone are 2000 to 3000 Baht.

~I stay at budget hotels and guest houses from 850 to 1000 night. Some are prepaid while others aren%26#39;t. This also comes out of the amount I take.

Don%26#39;t forget taxis come out of this money as does airport departure tax from every Island you fly out of as well as your international flight. I assume you%26#39;ll want a few souvenirs.

You won%26#39;t be able to do much touring. 3000 Baht a day is the normal for a girl... assuming shopping, touring and eating street food is on the agenda.

Better to bring more than regret not bringing enough. It%26#39;s easy to spend money there. Also note: Some tour guides charge more than others because they are W-A-Y better.
