young kids - JW marriott or Laguna Beach Resort?

Hi. Like many others before me, the sheer number of resorts available in Phuket is making my head swim. My 2 in tow are 3yr and 1yr old.

I%26#39;d like to avoid the hustle and bustle of Patong so I don%26#39;t mind the quieter beaches. A nice pool is a must, as is a good kids club and playground.

I%26#39;ve booked into Marriott but am rather put off by the fact that we will be forced to pay exorbitant prices for hotel food since it is rather remote and quite a distance from any real restaurants.

Now I%26#39;ve read that LBR has got a nice boat ride round the adjacent resorts and has elephants to amuse the kids. Also a lot easier on the pocket!

Which one is do you think would be better?

young kids - JW marriott or Laguna Beach Resort?

It%26#39;s a bit of a toss up really.

Both places have young elephants that come around daily. At JWM the baby elephant comes right around on the grounds and to the pools. LBR the elephant is out on the beach in front of the resort - never seen it right on the grounds - though it may well go there.

Both have great pools. JWM probably has the best pool though for youngsters, quite large, shallow, good easy slide. LBR has a good slide too - but the pool is shared with adults and kids, and the slide is probably a bit much for a three year old.

The Laguna resorts do have a free ferry ride that actually takes about an hour if you go the whole circuit. Good for adults as well, my wife and I take it around Christmastime - just to see the decorations.

I%26#39;ve heard quite good things about the JWM Kid%26#39;s Club, but nothing about LBR (but that doesn%26#39;t mean anything).

Hello Ted!

I was so hoping that you%26#39;d reply. Thank you for your response.

I remember you saying on another thread that there are some mom n pop joints along the beach outside the Marriott. Are they still there and are there more to choose from now? Have you tried any of them yourself? And would it be ok for the kids to try the hawker food or would they risk a tummy upset?

Once again, thanks for taking the trouble to reply.

There are a few places just north of the JWM, and several closer to the Sala Phuket, just a bit south of the JWM - quite walkable distances for both areas.

A new Anantara will open in October (I think) - right next to the JWM, not to mention the HUGE new section of ';Holiday Club'; or whatever JWM calls it. So . . . my guess is there will, very soon, be quite a few more little restaurants out on the beach.

Sorry, I couldn%26#39;t even begin to guess what a one or three year old tummy can handle! My tummy can handle it - in fact a bigger problem lately is that the restaurants are making food less and less spicy trying to please the wimpy tourists . . . some places now make their food totally bland - ick! I guess it pleases those with lousy palates?

Hi Iwwho1,

Have you decided on where you will be staying or have to gone on your trip already? I am currently looking to stay the JW MArriott in Feb with our 34mo old daughter and would like to seek additional information regarding JWM%26#39;s Children facility/pools.

Hi, We stayed at Laguna Beach resort last April. We were three families travelling together with 7 kids aging from 3 -10. This is a fantastic resort. The pool is great. The (2) three year olds loved the water slide, in fact it was hard to get them off it. Anna the resident elephant walks around the resort, right bedside the pool which the kids can ride. She comes out in the morning and afternoon and in the afternoon she also swims at the beach. Our kids played in the water with her and loved watching her roll in the sand after her swim. I believe that they now have another baby elephant as well as Anna would be 6 now.

We had a deluxe seafacing room which was beautiful - great view.

Our kids only went to Kids club once and they enjoyed it.

There are quite a few restaurants on the beach right in front of the resort as well as beach shacks that stock drinks, icecreams etc. There was a man that grilled cobs of corn on the beach that my kids loved to eat as a snack by the pool. The resort is casual about you bringing drinks , snacks to the pool purchased outside the resort.

Didn;t eat at the resort at all, too expensive (like most resorts) but did buy cocktails in the pool at happy hour. We enjoyed the Blue lagoon Restaurant ringht in fromt of the resort for lunch and dinner as loved Lotus (a drive from the resort but they will pick you up and drop off free of charge) book at reception.

If you have any other questions please feel free to ask.

Hi there. I can understand your concerm re food prices as it broke the budget for some friends of mine that stayed at the JW. Why don%26#39;t you try the courtyard marriot in Surin they have a great kids club and pool. Also a lot cheaper in the accomadation side. If you want an apartment style you could try the Chava Resort next door they have a great pool and accomadation especially for families. I know the manager and he has a deal with the courtyard to use there facilities and kids club.

The beach at surin is 1 of the best on the island and there are many budget restaurants in the area.

Cheers Brian
