It is impossible to answer your question. It depends on what you are interested. Personally I do not find Patong seedy, but a lot of fun. Are you a single male? I would definitely stay in Patong and rather than in an expensive hotel, I would choose a guesthouse - Summer Breeze is nice.

Kata is further out from the nightlife and an expensive tuk tuk ride, but if you want beaches and a quiet life and restaurants that are not as good or varies as those in Patong, that is a choice. Up to you....

Soi Bangla and surroundings can be seedy, but the rest of Patong is different. So you can stay in Patong, but away from the seedy area but still within walking distance..

IMO though, the beach of Patong is not very nice, and with all the tuktuk drivers, aggressive tailors and other touts, I would personally prefer not to stay in Patong. Kata Beach has a lot nicer beach, good bars and restaurants and enough entertainment for most people, without the hassle from Patong.

You can also go North, Kamala Beach or even further North, or South of Patong to Karon (bit busier than kata but still nice), the mentioned Kata Beach or Nai Harn (really quiet plus further away from Patong).

Lots of options, depending on what you%26#39;re looking for.
