Interesting non tourist places

Just walking the streets is in itself educational.

There is plenty to see residential mixed in with

businesses.

We walked for 5 hours one visit several years ago

%26amp; enjoyed every minute of it. Came across the Anti

Money Laundering Office which I had to take a photo

of.

If you end up not knowing where you are like us just

hail down a moving Taxi or Tuk Tuk to take you back

to your hotel.

Don%26#39;t forget to get a business card from your hotel

so you can show it to the Taxi or Tuk Tuk driver.

We found this a lot easier as the hotel address was

written in Thai.

Dont know if you would consider Chinatown touristy. But the locals in chinatown definitely do not go out of their way to do tourity things for tourist. Just wander around the area, it has small temples, little shops etc.

That%26#39;s difficult

anyway check out this

it%26#39;s called Sankhlaburi in Kanchanaburi. Quite far from Bangkok but i see many photos from there and it catches my eyes

Hi All,

Thanks for your replies.

We like to wander the streets to go exploring and come across unusual and interesting sights.

But would like to have a list of things to see .

Cheers,

Stewie.

Take the Chao Phrya Express boat upriver, and jump off at one of the stops and wander around.

If you go to the end of the line at Nonthaburi, there is a big old teak palace right by the pier (old Provincial Hall) which includes a small museum, the promenade by the pier has street lights shaped like Durian fruit, which is a speciality of the province and there is an annual Durian festival here. Walk past the clock tower and turn left, up on your right is one of Thailand%26#39;s most notorious prisons. Walking straight on past the clock tower, there is a huge wholesale and retail market on the right, it runs along the main road, and into all the alleyways on the right. The town has lots of interesting shops and is typically provincial, despite being next door to Bangkok.

A short way further upriver on the other side, you can visit Wat Chelerm Prakiat, a famous and ancient royal walled temple with pretty gardens. Back on the Nonthburi side, further upstream is Pakkred town, well known for Koh Kred and its ancient potteries. Find Sukprachasan 2 Road, know locally at ';Soi Wat Ku';, and jump on a Ssontaew (local bus) or motorcycle taxi and go the 3-4 km to the Mon temple of Wat Ku. On the left inside the gate is a huge reclining Buddha, hidden behind it is a the remains of an old royal barge which sank opposite the temple drowning the royal consort and her children. Locals rub the boat for luck. Have lunch or dinner just down the road at ';Songfangklong'; (Buddys) for good seafood on the riverside, or at Suan Thip for elegant riverside dining at reasonable rate.

Another idea, take the boat to Siriraj hospital, on the left of the hospital is a maze of small sois which are a fascinating walk, taking you to some unexpected places :)

Hi Dragonc,

Thanks for your great idea , it%26#39;s sounds fantastic.

Cheers,

Stewie.

Stewie, one trip I went on a bicycle tour of BKK which was fantastic - round market gardens, off the track temples, schools and so on. Its not hard core cycling but it is a lot of fun and you definitely get to see many bits of BKK you wouldn%26#39;t see and that don%26#39;t have tourists all over them. The company I used was lets-tour-bangkok.com/backroads-bicycle-tour?/a> It was a blast.

You might consider going to a Muay Thai (Thai kick-boxing) tournament. Its one twice a week I think at alternating venues (Lumpini Stadium and Ratchadamnoen Stadium). Yes, there will be some tourists there - but its overwhelmingly Thai people and a real spectacle. Ritual dances, locals betting up the back (since it%26#39;s illegal), cheap beer, ... Even if you%26#39;re not into violent sports (I am not but it was a great thing to do). Just note that the taxi %26#39;mafia%26#39; controls taxis coming out of the venues.

Cheers, --Kip
