Which BKK hotel

We are due to arrive in Bangkok Oct 14 for 5nights. I currently have a room reserved at Navalai River Resort. I have never been to Thailand before and am a bit nervous of our choosing (location that is). Several of our friends tell us that we need to stay in the Sukhumvit Rd area. We are looking for an area where at night we can walk to shops and food.

If we change to stay in Sukhumvit area, we are looking at Novetel Lotus or Sofitel. OR any reccomendations given.

We are confussed and don%26#39;t know which area to pick. Any help would be most appreciated.

Which BKK hotel

Its in thew old city area near the Grand Palace, however few tourists stay in that area as most of the shopping and eating, and best transport, is in the Siam, Silom and Sukhumvit areas.

When we go to Bangkok we will be staying at the Admiral Premier.
