Buying jewlery without being ripped off!!!!

Hi , where can we buy nice jewlery from diamonds or a watch , without getting ripped off? Do we go to a big shopping mall? Any advice would be great thank you.

Buying jewlery without being ripped off!!!!

Central or Robinson departments stores are very reliable, as are places like Siam Paragon. They are not the cheapest but still a bargain compared with Europe. Before you buy anything asak for a tourist card which gives you a 5% discount. They often have sales so you may find some bargains. No jewellery is hallmarked, and whatever you do, NEVER go with a taxi driver, a tuktuk driver, or a smartly dressed tout with a wonderful story - its all a scam.

My goodness , i cant belive what i have just read , all those scams , a very interesting read, and worrying too! Thanks bkk3

Go to any shop in a proper shopping mall.

The stuff you get at Central World, Emporium, Paragon, Central will be the genuine article.

At MBK, I dunno, I dont really trust them but others may have a differnt opinion.

Also check out if you are able to claim back VAT tax from where you purchase your jewellry, it can make quite a difference to the final price that you have ended up paying.

There are some great stores you can visit - any tuk-tuk driver will take you there becasue he get a kickback even if you do not buy. In those big stores you will see a range of jewellery that is amazing. But not the cheapest in Bangkok.

There are lots of honest places out there with better prices than the big stores. My wife has had great success at Peter Nang (not far from MBK) particularly with having existing jewellery remodelled.

Bangkok is probably noted for quality rubies and gold jewellery rather than diamonds or watches.

In Chinatown you will see amazing gold shops that work like an exchange and sell a variety of 22cgt gold by weight. They weight it and calculate todays price. Similar at MBK but a little more expensive.

Watches are the biggest problem becasue some of the fakses are so good.

Whatever you do price what you want before you leave home so you know what to expect to pay.

cheers
